The President of CETRI-TIRES Angelo Consoli will bring the vision of the Construction sector as one of the pillars of Third Industrial Revolution at the EcoAP, the 12th European Forum on Eco-Innovation organized by the European Commission.

The Forum will be held in Westerkerk, Amsterdam, on April 25-26 2012.

The construction sector is the largest consumer of raw materials in the EU and construction and demolition activities account for about 33% of waste generate annually. This has led to important policies and initiatives at EU and Member State levels with a range of programmes, funding schemes and regulatory measures to support innovation in the sector.
 
Although efforts towards sustainable construction have increased, these have largely covered fragmented segments of the construction industry – i.e. focusing only on energy issues or carbon emissions—thereby omitting the environmental and economic impact construction value chain. Much remains to be done for the construction sector to become more sustainable while increasing its competitiveness – particularly in terms of true life cycle costs in economic and environmental terms, improving construction management and skills, and involvement of both public and private organizations.

At EU level, the Eco-Innovation Action Plan (EcoAP) launched in December 2011 complements the Resource Efficient Europe Flagship Initiative and its roadmap that include specific points regarding construction. The Covenant of Mayors is a successful EU initiative which clearly shows the need and the potential for transformative change by focusing on the key actors in the construction value chain. Further policy initiatives on sustainable production and consumption, sustainable building and sustainable competitiveness of the construction sector are expected to be published in 2012.

We're glad to announce an important meeting organized on Feb 23 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, by the Club of Amsterdam.
 
The meeting will be held at the former building of the Volkskrant and the discussion and speechs will be around the future of Social Biomimicry.
 
Hereafter a brief excerpt from the section of the website of the Club of Amsterdam dedicated to this event:
 
"Nature has a long history and it's been known for some time that designers and architect find good solutions and ideas looking at nature. Nature is an inspiration when it comes to effective use of materials, construction of housing and other design challenges. But there is more to learn from nature.

Did you ever ask yourself questions like: How do swarms, flogs or herds work together? How do living organisms cooperate? How does nature grow or respond to changes? What about leadership?

In the meeting of February 23, 2012 we would like to address some of the issues of social Biomimicry. We will present some common patterns from nature that are inspirational for social issues like: communication, teamwork, leadership, development of organisations and society. We will give an idea of how to translate these patterns to work situation, architecture of organisations, teamwork and future growth. Social Biomimicry gives a fresh new perspective and we also belief it will contribute to resilient and future-orientated organisations."
