The Solar School Adoptions Project is dedicated to children and to the Sun, both inexhaustible sources of life, light, warmth and love.

The greatest part of the human population that live in economically disadvantaged geographic areas is forced to live under the poverty and human dignity treshold. The statistics drawn by global organizations outline worrying data about the future of children and the inhabitants of these areas. Illiteracy and lack of electricity are the main causes of exploitation, slavery and early death.
  • Almost a billion people can’t read or write even their own name.
  • About half of the world population (three billion people) live with less than 2 USD per day. 1.3 billion people are living with less than 1 USD per day.
  • 1.3 billion people is also the amount of people in the world that doesn’t have access to electricity (20% of the world population).
Analysis of the economic-social context
The current expensive, polluting and outdated energy model will never allow the achievement of social and human rights and democracy in the South of the World.
We need a sharp change of course that brings both a sustainable and democratic energy revolution through renewable energy sources and the valorization of local resources in the South of the World.
CETRI-TIRES (Third Industrial Revolution European Society), in this regard, has created and studied income and energy inequalities using two indexes:
I.I.C. = Income Inequality Critical
E.I.C. = Energy Inequality Critical
In percentage terms, the difference in annual economic treatment between industrialized Western countries and South of the World is 10 to 1 (IIC = Income Inequality Critical). The same incidence (10 to 1) in percentage terms, is clear from a comparison of the average annual income and the average annual cost of the energy produced with fossil and fissile fuels (EIC = Energy Inequality Critical).
CETRI-TIRES cooperates with important research centers in public and private universities, both in Italy and abroad, and with international training centers and primary and secondary schools.
Starting from this experience CETRI-TIRES prepared a Training  Plan inspired by the vision of the American economist Jeremy Rifkin for the creation of a new distributed, interactive, democratic energy model.
The formative model proposed by CETRI-TIRES has positive ripercussions on the environment and on the climate, and at the same time it becomes also the occasion for a great operation of redistribution of wealth and of decisional power, through the involvement of citizens and civil society organizations in participative decision-making processes.

Aware of the need to provide students with the skills, techndatabeers-18092014-big-data-needs-artist-explorers-fran-castillo-16-638ical and vocational they need to live and work in a sustainable economy of Third Industrial Revolution, our global team is working with universities and school systems to contribute to the transformation in TIR learning environments.
(J. Rifkin, The Third Industrial Revolution, 2011)

The above mentioned conditions, referred to data on energy and on illiteracy rate in developing countries, become the starting point that inspires the Solar School Adoptions Project.

The objective of the project is to increase the school population by creating the conditions to allow many poor families to send their children to school with proper equipment and in conditions of human dignity. To diffuse basic culture is necessary in order to ensure, among other things, evironmentalist knowledge and awareness about human rights and common goods.
The renewable energy component is a fundamental part of the project, given that children pass their time working to help their poor household economies. These working activities are carried out during the day after school, and it becomes therefore almost impossible for the kids to study: during the evening hours, in fact, it’s impossible for the children to study because almost every house lacks of electricity. The few houses that are connected to electric grid are anyway bond to a limited consumption, both because of the high cost of energy and because of the intermittent supply of electricity due to obsolete distribution grid.
Actors of the project
The idea is that of create an active collaboration using a specific operative protocol whose protagonists are:

  • Children and their families;
  • CETRI-TIRES together with Associations, NGOs and volunteers that operate for fund raising, carrying out and monitoring of Solar School Adoptions;
  • local Institutions (schools, universities, municipalities);
  • empathic donors;
  • The Guarantor.
Sun and culture
The objective is that of suppplying a solar-school kit to each pupil, allowing him/her to have a regular and fruitful school attendance. The kit will allow the kidsto study at home during night hours, still allowing them to keep on helping their families after school. Another advantage, from a social point of view, is that light will serve as a point of aggregation allowing students to evaluate, discuss and share their school experiences with other students and with their own families. The use of a renewable energy lamp will allow the student to enter in contact and understand the real applications of Photovoltaic technologies.

The project foresees the supplying of all the school material needed by the students for the whole school year:

The material for the school kits will be purchased directly in the countries in which the project will be carried out in order to increase local economies and in respect of the environment.

The cost of the Slar School Kit will be defined basing on its content, on the country recipient of the intervention, on transportation expenses and on kid’s and their families’ needs.
The important role and the studies in loco of the partner Associations and of the volunteers will allow the carrying out and the onitoring of the school adoptions together with local institutions, as declared and undersigned by the parties in the frame agreement.
Our website will host the specific documentation for each campaign of Solar School Adoptions.

The Donor
The following individuals and bodies can join the project as Donors:
  • individuals,
  • legal persons,
  • associations,
  • foundations,
  • public bodies,
  • companies,
  • educational institutions,
  • other institutions.

The Adoption
For each adoption a paper documentation will be compiled: this documentation will contain:
  • the identity and photograph of the child,
  • the authorization of the family,
  • the school of reference and the relevant authorization,
  • the amount of the donation,
  • the identity of the donor/donors,
  • the generality of the Guarantor.

A central figure in the success of the project is the Guarantor, trustworthy person of CETRI-TIRES that will be preliminarily indicated in the document and in the online page dedicated to every single adoption.

The role of the Guarantor is to promote the project and to raise the funds necessary for a single Adoption; it can also be made by dividing the amount among more donors.
The Guarantor is the one who has the responsibility and the commitment to collect donations of one or more third parties with regard to adoptions;

The Guarantor may take care of up to 10 adoptions per year and can issue receipts in the name and on behalf of CETRI-TIRES.
The Guarantor will know the full details of the child and details of the life of the same and will have access to pictures and videos of the pupil, may contact the teachers, have a direct relationship with the NGO of reference and can test and support the same action for the following years.
The Guarantor may be equally a natural person or a legal person; it will check all the documents certifying the successful adoption and inform the donor or donors of all operational phases of adoption via e-mail or with a phone call.
The Guarantor can talk to the student on the internet and in person, can visit him/her and support his/her side activities as well.
CETRI-TIRES entrusts this role to university centers, schools and activists of great moral importance, that own great professional skills along with humility and empathy, and love for Mother Earth.
The certificate of adoption that will certify the nobility of the donation will be transmitted to the Guarantor and to the Donor, to the School of reference, to CETRI-TIRES and to the local partner association. All the actors will undersign it to ensure the successful donation, allowing the monitoring of school attendance of the pupil.
